Overlap Stone, Koh Samui: how to get there by scooter (2026)

Overlap Stone is the balanced boulder above Lamai, a short ride inland from Lamai Viewpoint. I come for the rock, not only a deck over the bay. Here is how I get there from Chaweng and from Lamai, what the steep scooter road is like, and how long to stay.

How to get to Overlap Stone by scooter

From Chaweng I ride south on the ring road to Lamai. In Lamai I leave the shore and head inland, uphill. Lamai Viewpoint is on the same climb, closer to the sea. Overlap Stone is the next pull-off inland — the balanced boulder, not the deck. If the turn is unclear, follow the map point.

The Overlap Stone scooter road is steep, and from Lamai it is short. A 125cc automatic pulls it; a 50cc, or two adults on a 125cc, labours. See 50cc or 125cc if you have not rented yet. I hold a steady throttle and do not stop on the steepest pitch.

I leave the scooter off the riding line. Any fee to enter or park is posted on site; it changes, so I do not quote one.

Steep descent. Brake before a bend, not in it. I do not ride this hill after dark.

The boulder and how long to stay

You come for the rock: a large boulder balanced above Lamai, with Lamai bay below. It is not a platform — that is Lamai Viewpoint, closer to the sea. I stay twenty to forty minutes, enough to walk round the boulder and look down at Lamai Beach.

The stone is smooth. Dry, with decent shoes, people step onto it. I stay off once it is wet: the open side falls away, and smooth rock does not catch a slipping foot. If the edge feels wrong, the view from the ground beside it is the same coast.

Shade is thin on the stone. Bring water from Lamai; I would not count on a stall, and if one is open, check the price on site.

When to go: light, heat, October–December rain

I go in the morning. The climb is cooler, the stone is not hot, and the air over Lamai is clearer. Late afternoon is the other good hour: warmer light on the bay, then down to the beach. Midday works if you are already up there, but the rock is exposed.

October to December is the wet season. Expect the steep pitches to turn slick, and stay off the boulder when it is wet. If a squall hits, wait before you descend: the first minutes after rain are when tyres slide. I do not ride this hill after dark.

Cloud sits on this ridge. If the hills above Lamai are white, the view will be too. A clear morning after rain is worth the ride, as long as you treat the stone as wet until you touch it.

What to combine it with

Overlap Stone is a stop on the viewpoints loop, 38.3 km as I map it. You climb into the hills once and take several lookouts, instead of riding up from the coast for a single rock. Pair it with Lamai Viewpoint: the deck is a few minutes back toward the sea. I do the boulder first, while I still want the extra pitch, then the deck on the way down.

Lamai Beach is the natural finish before you head back to Chaweng. Wat Lamai sits on the Lamai bend — a sign you are still on the coast road, not on the hill yet. I would not add more inland stops the same day; the gradient tires you out, not the distance.

If the full loop is more than you want: ring road to Lamai, up to these two lookouts, down to the beach, and back in daylight.

Questions

How to get to Overlap Stone, Koh Samui, by scooter?

From Chaweng, ride the ring road south to Lamai, then inland and uphill. From Lamai the climb is short and steep. Park off the lane. If the turn is unclear, use the map point on this page.

Is the Overlap Stone scooter road steep?

Yes. It is steep. A 125cc is comfortable; a 50cc with two people struggles. Do not stop on the steepest pitch, and do not ride it after dark.

How long should I stay at Overlap Stone?

Twenty to forty minutes covers the boulder and the view over Lamai. Add Lamai Viewpoint on the way down if you want the deck as well.

Is Overlap Stone the same place as Lamai Viewpoint?

No. Overlap Stone is the balanced boulder, further inland. Lamai Viewpoint is the deck over the bay, on the same hill road, closer to the sea.
