Heaven Gate Koh Samui viewpoint — the steep road up (2026)

Heaven Gate is a photo-zone on a hill inland from Nathon, and the steep scooter road is the part that matters. This page is how I ride there from Chaweng and from Maenam, how long I stay, and what I combine it with. The map pin is unverified, so check the last turn on the ground.

Getting there by scooter

The Heaven Gate Koh Samui viewpoint is inland from Nathon, and the last stretch is a very steep scooter road up to a photo-zone. The coordinates on this page are unverified, so when the navigator says you are close, look for the road that actually climbs. If the turn looks wrong, turn around and check.

From Chaweng I ride to the north coast first, then inland and up. Nathon is the nearest coast town, about 5 km away along my route. Maenam Viewpoint (View Top) is another hill nearby, about 2.2 km away in a straight line. The mountain route that includes it is 45.7 km as a whole day.

Heaven's Gate Samui road is steep. In my experience you want a scooter that pulls uphill, and you brake before the gradient, not on it. If the surface looks wet or uncertain, skip the last climb. Park where other scooters are standing, and take fuel on the coast.

What you get, and how long to stay

This is a photo-zone on a hilltop. I ride up, use whatever is set up for photos that day, look around, and leave. I stay about 20–40 minutes. I do not plan a meal here. If someone is selling water, check on site — do not count on it.

The pin is unverified, and what you see depends on where you stand, so judge the open side yourself. For another stop, Maenam Viewpoint has a restaurant, and The Cocoon is a hilltop restaurant near Chaweng.

Treat Heaven Gate as a pause. If the photo-zone is crowded, wait a few minutes or catch it on the way back. I leave the helmet with the scooter and take the key.

When to go

The climb decides the hour. A steep scooter road in full sun, after the ride from Chaweng, is hotter than the same road early. I prefer the morning or after 16:00, when the hill is easier and the photo-zone is usable. Under cloud, midday is fine if you do not linger.

Rain on Samui builds from October through December. On this road I expect the steep parts to go slick, and I slow down before the gradient. The first minutes of a shower are the worst. If it is already heavy when you leave Maenam, save Heaven Gate for another day. Notes on wet roads and night riding are on the rain and night page.

I do not ride up after dark. The pin is approximate and the road is steep. Morning is the simple plan.

What to combine it with

Heaven Gate is a stop on the mountain roads ride: Pom Mountain and Secret Buddha Garden, 45.7 km as mapped. That is how I use it. One photo-zone does not need a separate out-and-back when the mountain day is already the plan.

Maenam Viewpoint (View Top) is a nearby hill with a restaurant and a very steep approach. The Cocoon is a hilltop restaurant near Chaweng, better if you want to sit. I add one of them, not both, unless the mountain route is the whole day.

Wat Na Phra Lan, by Maenam pier, is the landmark on the coast if you start from the north shore. I use it to get my bearings, not as a required stop. Be back on the coast while it is still light.

Questions

How do I get to the Heaven Gate Koh Samui viewpoint?

From Chaweng, ride to Maenam, then inland and up the steep scooter road. From Maenam you are closer. The pin is unverified, so confirm the climbing turn when you are near.

Is Heaven's Gate Samui road too steep for a beginner?

Steepness matters more than traffic. You need a scooter that pulls uphill, and you brake before the gradient. In my experience a 125cc is calmer than a 50cc. If the road looks wet, skip it.

How long should I stay at Heaven Gate?

About 20–40 minutes. It is a photo-zone, and I do not count on food. To sit with a view, add Maenam Viewpoint or The Cocoon.

Can I ride to Heaven Gate in the rain?

From October through December, expect the steep road to be slick. If rain is already heavy on the coast, save the hill for a dry day. I do not ride it after dark.
