Bangkok to Koh Samui by motorbike, via the Don Sak ferry (2026)
People ask if a Bangkok to Koh Samui road trip is just another day on the bike. It is, until Don Sak: the car ferry takes the motorbike to Lipa Noi, and the island roads I ride start when you leave the ramp. This page is what to confirm before you board, and what changes once you are on the island.
Colour — all the routes on this site (list under the Routes button on the map), faint — every road I have ridden. GPX works in Maps.me, Organic Maps, OsmAnd, Garmin.
Can you drive to Koh Samui?
No. There is no bridge, so you cannot drive to Koh Samui. A Bangkok to Koh Samui road trip goes south to Surat Thani province, then onto a ferry. For a motorbike that ferry is Don Sak to Lipa Noi, on the west coast.
I have not logged the Bangkok highway here. The GPS points are the island, after the ramp. Take distance and hours from your navigator, and check the ferry times before you plan to cross in the evening.
The day down to Don Sak
Give Bangkok to Don Sak a whole day. I will not print kilometres I have not ridden for this site. Use your navigator, then add time for food, fuel and a queue. If the sailing is gone, sleep on the mainland side. The island after dark is covered in rain and night riding.
Thai law requires a motorcycle licence of category A, and a foreign licence only together with a 1949 International Driving Permit showing category A, plus a helmet. That applies on the highway and on Samui. Any fine is an indicative range and it changes; check locally. Keep a paper copy on you.
A 110–125cc automatic is enough once you are on the island. I would not take a 50cc down from Bangkok for a day this long. Flying and renting is the other practical option; sizes are on the 50cc or 125cc page.
The Don Sak–Lipa Noi ferry with a motorbike
Buy a vehicle crossing, not a foot ticket you hope will cover the bike. You and the motorbike take the Don Sak–Lipa Noi ferry; at the window, confirm this sailing loads bikes and that Lipa Noi is the landing. Price, timetable and how early to queue change; check on site.
Follow the crew who load the deck. A tie-down habit copied from a website may not match that boat. Engine off, bike where they point. Keep the helmet and the license out for the ramp.
You land at Lipa Noi, on the west coast, on the 4169. In my experience the west is the quiet third of the ring: two-lane asphalt, coconut groves, long straights. One way is Taling Ngam, the other is Nathon. If the tank is low, fill up on the mainland before you board.
What changes on the island
The speed drops, which is the point. This site's ring route is 63.7 km of two-lane asphalt. Ridden at an easy island pace, without stops, that is about two hours; with real stops it is half a day. Chaweng, the busy junctions, is across the island from where the ferry leaves you.
From Lipa Noi, ride the south-west route first: Taling Ngam, Lipa Noi and Laem Sor, 36.3 km, easy. The ring road 4169 is the full loop when you want it. Neither belongs to the evening you arrived. From October to December, rain is the extra: pull over when a shower starts, because the first minutes lift oil off the asphalt. Other months, start early and stay out of the worst heat.
The first day after the ramp
Sleep, then ride one coast. South-west is the natural morning, because you are already at Lipa Noi. Save the full ring for a fresh day, so Chaweng is not something you meet tired. Steeper inland roads need the same patience; they are the wrong project for the day you leave the ferry.
If you only have a single day on Samui after Don Sak, stay on the 4169 along the west and stop while the light is good. The island is a slower ride than the highway you just finished.
Questions
Can you drive to Koh Samui?
No. There is no bridge. The bike goes to Don Sak and crosses on the car ferry to Lipa Noi. Which sailing takes motorbikes changes; ask at the pier that day.
How long is a Bangkok to Koh Samui road trip by motorbike?
I will not print a mainland distance I have not logged. Treat Bangkok to Don Sak as a full day, plus the ferry, and do not ride the island that night. Hours belong to your navigator.
Does the Don Sak Lipa Noi ferry take a motorbike?
That is the car-ferry crossing riders use for a motorbike, and the landing is Lipa Noi. Still ask at the window: boats and the bike rule change. Price and the timetable are whatever the pier posts that day.
Where do you arrive on Koh Samui?
At Lipa Noi, west coast, onto ring road 4169. Nathon is a separate pier further along the same road. The easy first ride is the south-west loop: Taling Ngam, Lipa Noi and Laem Sor, 36.3 km.
What license do I need for this ride?
Thai law requires a motorcycle licence of category A, and a foreign licence only together with a 1949 International Driving Permit showing category A, plus a helmet. Fines are an indicative range and they change; check locally. The same rule applies after you land on Samui.
