View Top — the Maenam viewpoint above Samui's north coast (2026)
View Top is a hill in the north of Koh Samui, about five kilometres inland from Maenam Beach, with a view over the coast and across the strait to Koh Phangan. This page covers the ride up, when the view is worth it, and which other north-side hills fit into the same trip.

The road up is also very steep, and the map pin is unconfirmed, so check it on the map before you set off.

Jungle 360 Viewpoint
second-highest peak, full 360 view
A higher climb than View Top, so pair the two only if you are comfortable riding downhill on steep roads.

A natural stop before or after the climb: check the Phangan view from the sand first, then decide whether the hill is worth it today.
Getting there by scooter
From Maenam it is a short trip: take the 4169 to the Maenam stretch, then turn inland toward the hills. The viewpoint is about 5 km south-west of Maenam Beach in a straight line, and about 6 km by road from Maenam. The final 1.5 km climbs nearly 300 m.
From Chaweng follow the 4169 north-west past Bophut to Maenam, then turn inland the same way. In my experience that takes 30–40 minutes at a relaxed pace, depending on traffic in Bophut.
The final climb is very steep, gaining nearly 300 m in 1.5 km. Do not treat it as an easy ride just because you have a 125cc automatic. The descent is the part that needs attention, especially with a passenger. Brake before each bend and use both brakes, so the rear one does not overheat on a long slope.
Ask at the restaurant where to park and whether there is an entry fee or a buy-a-drink rule.
What you get and how long to stay
The view looks north over the coconut-covered slope and the Maenam coastline, with Koh Phangan filling the horizon across the water. On a clear day you can pick out Phangan's hills and its south-coast shore. On a hazy day the island turns into a grey outline.
I would allow time here for looking at the view. Twenty to forty minutes is enough for most people: photos, a rest in the shade, a drink if one is sold up there. Bring water anyway. The ride up is short but the top is exposed.
When to go
Late afternoon is my choice. The heat is lower, the sun comes from the west and lights Phangan from the side, and the north coast takes on warmer colours. If you stay for sunset, plan the descent. Riding the very steep descent in the dark adds difficulty; I would start down before sunset.
Early morning is the other good window. It is cooler, quiet, and the air is often clearer after a night of rain.
Midday works, but the light is flat and the top gets hot.
Rainy season (October–December): showers come in fast. Wet surfaces on a steep slope can be slippery, and moss and leaves make them worse. After heavy rain, wait until conditions are suitable for the descent, or skip the hills that day. More on this in riding in rain and at night.
Combine with
View Top is one of the stops on my mountain roads route (45.7 km). That route links the north and central hills with Pom Mountain and the Secret Buddha Garden. If you are comfortable on steep roads, it is the best way to see this viewpoint as part of a full day.
For a shorter half-day in the same area:
- Heaven Gate is about 2 km to the west. Its approach is also very steep. The location pin is unconfirmed, so check it on the map before you go.
- Jungle 360 is about 3 km to the south-east. It is a higher viewpoint, at about 590 m.
- Maenam Beach is below, for a swim and food after the descent.
Questions
Is the road to View Top Koh Samui hard for a beginner?
The final climb is very steep, gaining nearly 300 m in 1.5 km. A 125cc does not make it suitable for a beginner. Build experience on gentler hills first, and choose dry weather and daylight.
Can you see Koh Phangan from the Maenam viewpoint?
Yes, the view faces north across the strait to Phangan. How much you see depends on haze. Look from Maenam Beach first: if the island is sharp from there, it is worth the ride up.
Is there an entry fee at View Top?
I cannot confirm a fixed price. Viewpoints on Samui often charge a small fee or ask you to buy a drink, and this changes, so check when you arrive.
What is the best time to visit the Maenam viewpoint?
Late afternoon or early morning. Midday is hot with flat light. If you stay for sunset, ride down before full dark, because the hill road has no lights.
