The Cocoon — hilltop cafe above Samui airport (2026)
The Cocoon is a cafe on a hill on the northeast of the island, with the airport laid out below it. You come for a coffee and to watch planes take off and land over the trees. This page covers the ride up, how long to stay and how to fit it into a half day on this corner of Samui.

The last part up is a steep side road, so climb steadily and come down on gentle brakes, and avoid riding it for the first time in the rain or after dark.

Getting there by scooter
The Cocoon sits on the hills between Chaweng and the airport, so from the north end of Chaweng it is a short ride. Take the road around the airport headland towards Choeng Mon and Plai Laem, then turn up into the hills. It is about 7 km from central Chaweng, roughly 15–20 minutes before allowing for traffic and the climb. Big Buddha is about 2.5 km away in a straight line; the road journey is longer.
The last stretch up the hill is the part to take seriously: it is very steep in places. Climb in a low steady rhythm, and on the way down use both brakes gently instead of riding the rear brake all the way. Do not assume a small automatic will climb comfortably, especially with a passenger.
Ask the staff where to leave the scooter.
What you get there and how long to stay
The point of the place is the view. You look down over the green around the airport and the runway, with the sea beyond it. Planes come in low over the trees, and that is the plane spotting people search for. It is a cafe, so plan to order something rather than just walk in, take photos and leave. I don't keep track of the menu or prices. They change, so look at the menu on site.
- Time to allow: Allow 45 minutes to an hour for a drink; how many planes you see depends on the schedule. If you want a particular departure, stay longer.
- Planes: traffic depends on the day's schedule, and some days you will wait between movements. That is part of it. Sit facing the runway and the sound tells you when one is coming.
- Opening hours: I can't give reliable ones. Check before riding up the hill, especially early in the morning or late in the evening.
When to go
Going by the coordinates, the airport lies to the west and southwest of the cafe. That means the late afternoon sun sits ahead of you and the runway gets the warm light. Mid-morning is another option for avoiding the midday heat.
Midday is hot on the climb and the view looks washed out, so I would skip it.
From October to December is the rainy season. Low cloud can hide the view completely, and after a downpour the steep part of the side road is slippery. If it is raining at the bottom, wait it out. Wait until the rain eases and conditions are suitable for the descent.
Combine with
The Cocoon is one of the stops on my temples of the east route (24.7 km). It strings together Big Buddha, Plai Laem and Khao Hua Jook, so the cafe works as a coffee break in the middle of a temple morning.
If you don't want the whole route, here is a short half-day version:
- Wat Plai Laem in the morning, while the lake temple is quiet. It is about 2 km from the cafe in a straight line.
- Big Buddha next door. Bring shoulder and knee cover for both temples.
- Up to the Cocoon for a drink and the planes.
- Down to Choeng Mon Beach for a swim. The beach is nearby; swim only when conditions are calm.
Reverse the order if you want to end the day at the cafe in the evening light.
Questions
Can you see planes from the Cocoon on Koh Samui?
Yes, that is the main reason people go. The cafe looks down over the airport and planes pass low on approach and take-off. How many you see depends on the day's schedule.
Is the road up to the Cocoon hard on a scooter?
The last stretch up the hill is very steep in places. A 125cc does not make it an easy beginner ride; come in daylight and dry weather, and only attempt it if you are comfortable on steep roads.
Do I have to buy something at the Cocoon?
It is a cafe, so ordering a drink is the normal way to sit and watch. Check the menu and prices on site, I don't keep them up to date.
How far is the Cocoon from Chaweng?
It is about 7 km from central Chaweng, roughly 15–20 minutes before allowing for traffic and the steep climb.
