Scooter rental Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut, Maenam and Nathon (2026)

Where you pick the scooter up decides the first and last part of every day. Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut, Maenam and Nathon sit on or just off ring road 4169, but the traffic you ride through, and the routes that start cleanly, are different. This is how I would choose if I were landing with a licence and a week.

Colour — all the routes on this site (list under the Routes button on the map), faint — every road I have ridden. GPX works in Maps.me, Organic Maps, OsmAnd, Garmin.

Five places, one ring road

Almost everyone rents in one of these five. I start from Chaweng and use the others when the route already sits on that side. The 4169 is the road these towns are built along. You join it inside the same town. What changes is the junction and the first turn.

BaseLeavingFirst ride
ChawengBusy U-turns; slow beach road.Ring, south to Lamai
LamaiCalmer; hill north to Chaweng Noi.Ring south, or the falls
BophutWalking street by the beach; 4169 inland.North coast
MaenamStraight, lighter, view to Koh Phangan.North coast, either way
NathonPier traffic, then quiet west road.North or south-west
The mistake is choosing the beach and forgetting the exit. You ride that piece twice a day. A bad junction costs more time than a plainer stretch of the 4169.

Scooter rental Chaweng

Scooter rental Chaweng is the heaviest traffic I meet. Fine if you want this beach, a daily cost if you do not. The 4169 here has constant U-turns. The beach road is slower still, with songthaews and people stepping out. Look twice before you join the ring.

Clear of the junctions, two easy rides start at once. Clockwise, the ring road goes south to Lamai, sea on your left; take the climb from Chaweng Noi slowly, trucks cut the corners. The other way is the east temples — Big Buddha, Plai Laem and Khao Hua Jook — 24.7 km and easy, around the airport headland. Leave Pom Mountain and Secret Buddha Garden (45.7 km, hard) for later.

Lamai: calmer exit, same coast

Koh Samui scooter rental Lamai is the east coast without Chaweng's junctions each morning. You are on the same 4169, south of the Chaweng Noi climb. Southbound the road settles along the bay, then a little inland by Hua Thanon. Northbound you do that hill first. In the wet, expect a slick surface and brake before the curve.

The reason to base here is inland. The waterfalls route — Na Muang, Hin Lad, Wang Saotong — is 69.3 km, medium, and it leaves the ring on roads that climb. Expect a steeper grade than the 4169. If a track looks loose, I stay on the asphalt I know. Dogs sleep on the warm asphalt, so I am back on the 4169 before dark.

Scooter rental Bophut and Maenam

Scooter rental Bophut suits the north coast. Fisherman's Village is a walking street; by late afternoon it is people, not bikes, so I stay off it. The 4169 runs inland of the village. The north coast route — Bophut, Maenam, Bang Por, Nathon, 27.2 km, easy — is that road. The other direction, round the airport headland, reaches Big Buddha and the east temples, 24.7 km, without a long sit in Chaweng.

Maenam is the quiet stretch of the same coast: straighter ring, lighter traffic than Bophut or Chaweng, view across to Koh Phangan. One way is Bophut and the temples, the other is Bang Por and Nathon. Both are plain 4169.

Nathon, and what to check before you leave

Nathon is where the ring meets the ferry pier. When a boat is in, songthaews stop short; give them room, and do not pause in that lane to fix the map. Beyond it, the south-west ride — Taling Ngam, Lipa Noi, Laem Sor, 36.3 km, easy — feels like the same quiet road continuing. I finish past the pier in daylight.

Town does not change the rules. Thai law requires a motorcycle licence — category A — a foreign one only together with an IDP showing A — and a helmet. Fines change, check locally. Ask what the deposit covers before you take the key. Check brakes, horn, lights and tread before you leave. A 110–125cc automatic covers every route here. New to Thai traffic? Use the beginner notes, and do not take Chaweng at dusk as a first ride.

Questions

Is Lamai or Chaweng better for scooter rental on Koh Samui?

Lamai if you want a calmer exit on the east coast. Chaweng if that beach is the point and you can handle the junctions. The 4169 links them either way.

How do I ride out of a scooter rental in Bophut?

Skip Fisherman's Village once it fills with people on foot. Join the 4169 inland of the beach and turn west for Maenam and Nathon, or east for Big Buddha.

Is the ring road far from Chaweng, Lamai or Maenam?

No. They sit on the 4169, or on a beach lane just off it. Side-street time depends on the shop — check it when you collect the bike.

Can a beginner rent a scooter in Chaweng?

Yes, if you can hold a line. The risk is the junctions. The surface is ordinary asphalt. Go early, stay on the 4169, and save the mountain roads for later.
