Secret Buddha Garden on Koh Samui, by scooter (2026)
Secret Buddha Garden (Tar Nim) is a jungle sculpture park on Pom Mountain, inland from the coast. I come for the statues under the trees and for a steep climb inland. This page is the scooter approach from Chaweng, how long to stay, and what to ride it with.

Getting there by scooter
Secret Buddha Garden is inland on Pom Mountain. From Chaweng I leave the beach, join the ring and turn onto the climb the mountain route uses. I do not quote a time from Chaweng, because east-coast traffic changes it. Na Muang 2 is nearby, but it is a separate stop rather than a landmark on the garden's access road.
Is the Secret Buddha Garden road steep? Yes. The last stretch is steep; keep your speed controlled on the climb and descent. There is concrete road near the garden. For a Secret Buddha Garden scooter trip I use a 125cc automatic. A 50cc labours on this gradient; I leave it on the coast.
Park at the entrance and check on site where to stand the scooter, and whether the gate is open. I do not ride the climb after dark: meeting a car on a bend is the part I avoid.
What you get, and how long to stay
You get a jungle sculpture park: figures set among the trees on the slope. It is a walk, not a wat with a big hall. After you park you are on foot. Paths run between the statues under the canopy. I do not have a statue count or a full path map — walk what is open, and turn back when the trail stops being clear.
Plan on about 45–60 minutes if you walk slowly. Allow less time for a quick look. Entry is about 80 baht; check the current price at the entrance. Shoes that cope with damp leaves, and water for the ride up. The garden itself is shady. Carry water for the climb, especially in the midday heat.
When to go
I go in the morning. The climb is cooler, and an early start leaves more daylight for the descent. Midday is possible, but allow for the heat on the ride up. I leave late afternoon alone if the ridge is already clouding over.
Rain season is October to December. The garden is still a reasonable stop on a dry morning, but expect the access road to be slick, especially in the first minutes after a shower. I wait that out under cover. If the sky is already closed, I save the climb for another day. Damp leaves on the paths are normal even outside those months, so the walk is slower than the distance suggests.
What to combine it with
The route that includes this stop is the mountain loop, 45.7 km, on the mountain roads page. Pom Mountain and Secret Buddha Garden are why that ride exists. For a wider day back to the coast, the one-day classic is 54.5 km, and the garden is one stop on it, not the whole outing. I ride both as mapped. I do not add extra hill detours if I am still uneasy on climbs.
Pom Mountain viewpoint is the island's high point, about 635 m, and that climb is harder than the garden road. I decide them separately. The garden is a steep road to a gate you can do on a 125cc. The summit is another level, and I only continue with daylight left and a road I am happy to come back down. Na Muang 2 is another nearby stop to the south: an upper waterfall reached on foot, with a very steep approach to consider separately. I do the garden first, then the waterfall, so the steep descent is finished before I am on foot.
Questions
Is the Secret Buddha Garden road steep?
Yes, the approach is steep. A 125cc automatic is what I use; keep your speed controlled on the climb and descent.
Can I get to Secret Buddha Garden on a scooter?
Yes, if you are steady on hills. Park at the entrance and walk. I would not take a 50cc up this access road.
How long should I stay at Secret Buddha Garden?
About 45–60 minutes if you walk slowly, less for a quick look. Check at the gate whether there is an entrance fee; I do not list a price.
Should I ride up in the rainy season?
In October–December I only go up on a dry morning. After rain the steep road is slick, and I do not ride it wet or after dark.
