Scooter accidents on Koh Samui — where they happen, and how not to be one (2026)

A scooter crash can change a holiday in an instant. Here are the riding risks I would pay attention to, and the places where I would take extra care.

Five riding risks to watch for

  1. First time on a scooter, learning on the ring road. Samui traffic is not the place to learn. If you have never ridden, do your first hour on a quiet beach road at 20 km/h, not between trucks on the 4169.
  2. Alcohol. Do not ride home from Chaweng or Lamai at night after drinks. Take a songthaew or a taxi back; collect the scooter in the morning.
  3. Night and rain. Unlit stretches, dogs on the warm asphalt, sand washed onto corners, oil lifted by the first rain. Slow down and avoid combining these risks.
  4. Speed into a corner you do not know. The Lamai bend, the hill at Lad Koh, the descents from the mountain viewpoints. Brake before the corner and use smooth inputs through it.
  5. Flip-flops, shorts, no helmet. Wear a helmet, protective clothing and proper shoes to reduce the risk of injury if you fall.

Places on the map to respect

  • Chaweng ring-road junctions and U-turns — watch for vehicles turning across your path. Assume they have not seen you.
  • Chaweng Noi → Lamai hill and bend — take care on the climb and in bends, especially in rain.
  • Lamai town centre — watch for scooters pulling out and pedestrians crossing.
  • Nathon pier area — watch for vehicles stopping or pulling out near the pier.
  • Mountain descents (Pom Mountain, Jungle 360, Secret Buddha Garden road) — steep, with very steep sections near Pom Mountain and Jungle 360. Avoid overheating the brakes; use both gently, select a low gear if available, and leave the passenger behind until you know the road.
  • The west and south at night — ride within the distance your lights let you see clearly.

For a coastal ride, the ring road page walks through the loop and its stops.

If it happens

  1. Get clear of traffic if you can do so safely.
  2. Tourist Police: 1155 (English). Ambulance: 1669.
  3. If safe, photograph both vehicles, the road, the other party's plate and license.
  4. Do not sign anything in Thai you do not understand, and do not pay cash at the roadside under pressure. Call the rental shop.
  5. Clean road rash properly the same day and seek medical help for injuries.

The insurance trap

Read your travel policy's motorcycle cover and its conditions about licenses, helmets and alcohol. Do not assume every policy covers scooter riding or that every claim has the same conditions. Read your policy before you rent — see renting without a license.
